Confirming the Sacrament and other Silly Hollywood Blunders

My husband and I have this inside joke and it's one only Catholics who have a clue about their religion can get.

He said to me this morning on the phone from work that he needed to "confirm the sacrament."

It usually gets me laughing every time.

Several years ago we were watching this campy movie on Lifetime called Child of Darkness, Child of Light. It starred Sela Ward and then unknown Josh Lucas of Beautiful Mind fame. It's about...(brace yourselves fellow Catholics,) two "immaculate conception" where one is a Satan spawn and the other must be the son of God and they have to decide which one is which.

At some point after news of these two "immaculate conceptions" a bishop instructs a priest to go "confirm the sacrament" of the two "immaculate conceptions."

My husband and I busted out laughing.  If you're reading this and you're not Catholic or don't know anything about Catholicism, let me explain why this is so hilarious.

Sacraments are outward signs of inward grace, instituted by Christ for our sanctification.  There are seven Sacraments.

Initiation
   Baptism,
   Eucharist
   Confirmation
Healing
   Reconciliation, (Confession)
   Anointing of the sick
Vocation
   Holy orders
   Marriage

First of all, you don't "confirm" a Sacrament. At least not in the way it was phrased in the movie. Confirmation is a Sacrament. I guess you could "confirm" if someone received a Sacrament but that's about it. Second of all, there is only one Immaculate Conception and she is not a Sacrament. It's also not referring to a virgin birth. This leads to the other hilariousness of the movie.

The Immaculate Conception refers to the birth of the Virgin Mary. Not her virgin birth of Jesus. Mary was born without the stain of Original Sin. She is the only human creature to be born without sin. She was specifically created to carry God. God is perfect so He needed a perfect vessel to come into the world. Mary's parents still conceived her through normal human means so her birth was not virginal. Mary is the Immaculate Conception because she was born without sin.

A Satan spawn would certainly NOT be an Immaculate Conception. And there is no need to "confirm the sacrament" of the two non-immaculate conceptions of the two non-immaculately conceived pregnant teenage girls who are virgins about to have virgin births.

I know, a joke isn't funny if you have to explain it. Hubby and I will still bust out laughing at the phrase, "confirm the sacrament." of the two "immaculate conceptions."
ROFL!!!
